Paying Less at Chewy: The Order of Moves That Matters More Than Any Coupon
Posted on |
Most Chewy savings tips are a list of codes. That is the wrong way to think about it. On Chewy, the offers are tied to your first order, your Autoship choice and your cart size. So the order you use them in decides how much you keep.
Here are the offers the Chewy homepage shows today. We have not placed an order for this guide, so check the terms on your own screen.
| Offer | What the Site Says |
| Welcome gift | Free 25 dollar eGift card on orders of 49 dollars or more, new customers only, exclusions apply |
| First Autoship order | 35% off, and the Autoship page says up to 20 dollars |
| First pharmacy Autoship | 50% off, up to 50 dollars |
| Toys | Buy 3, get the 4th free on toys and costumes |
| Shipping | Free on orders of 49 dollars and up |
Move One: Build a Cart Over 49 Dollars
The welcome gift needs a first order of 49 dollars or more. So the first job is not to hunt for a code. It is to plan a cart that clears that line with things you will really use.
Good fillers are items you buy anyway. A bag of food, a tub of treats, a pack of litter deodorizer. Skip the random toy just to hit the number.
One thing to check at the cart. We could not tell from the homepage if the 49 dollars is counted before or after discounts. Look at the offer terms before you finish.
Move Two: Turn On Autoship for the First Order
Chewy’s Autoship page says new Autoship customers get 35% off the first order, with a maximum savings of 20 dollars. After that, the page says you save an extra 5% on select brands for future Autoship orders.
Here is the part most people miss. The cap means the best first cart is not a giant one. Our own math: 35% of 57.15 dollars is 20 dollars. Anything above that adds to the cart but not to the discount.
The page also says you can skip, change, reschedule or cancel at any time, and change the date up to 48 hours before shipment. So you are not locked in.

A First Cart Worked Out
This is our own example, not Chewy data. Say your first Autoship cart has 60 dollars of eligible dog food and treats.
| Step | What Happens | You Pay |
| Cart total | Eligible items | 60.00 dollars |
| Autoship 35% | 21 dollars, capped at 20 | 40.00 dollars |
| Free shipping | Cart is over 49 dollars | 40.00 dollars |
| eGift card | 25 dollar card for later, if you qualify | Not an instant discount |
The eGift card is a gift card for a future order, not money off today. Treat it as a bonus, and check the terms.

Move Three: Use the Pharmacy Offer Once
If your pet takes medicine, the homepage lists 50% off the first pharmacy Autoship order, up to 50 dollars. That is a larger cap than the regular Autoship offer.
Prescription items need vet approval. Chewy’s page says it will contact your vet if needed, and that vet diet foods follow the same rule. So start this early, since waiting on a vet can slow your first order.
Our own math: on a 100 dollar prescription order, half is 50 dollars, which hits the cap exactly. Above that, the extra spend is full price.
Move Four: Buy Toys in Fours
The homepage says buy 3 get the 4th free on toys and costumes. That works best when you actually want four toys, or when you can split a set with a friend who has a dog.
Do the math on the cheapest one. If you pick four toys at 9 dollars each, the free one saves 9 dollars. If you pick four at different prices, check which one the offer treats as free.
Move Five: Decide on Chewy Plus With Your Own Numbers
Chewy Plus is a paid membership. A July 2026 Slickdeals article lists it at 79 dollars a year, with free shipping on all orders and 5% back in rewards. That is a third party source, not Chewy, so confirm the price and terms on the site.
Our own math: 5% back needs about 1,580 dollars of yearly spending just to earn the 79 dollars back, before counting shipping. That is roughly 132 dollars a month.
- Probably worth it: Several pets, big food bags and a monthly spend well above that line.
- Probably not: One small pet, spending under 80 dollars a month, and carts that already clear the free shipping line.
Move Six: Watch the Shipping Line
The homepage says free shipping on orders of 49 dollars and up. But several product pages say free delivery on first time orders over 35 dollars. The two do not match, so look at your own cart before you add filler items.
The cheapest useful items, like a 4.53 dollar litter deodorizer seen on a cat page, make the cart easier to fill. But only add them if you will use them.
Use the Free Help Before You Buy from Chewy
The homepage lists free vet tech chat and customer support around the clock. That is worth using before you buy an expensive food or switch diets. A wrong food that your pet refuses is money wasted, even at a discount.
Chat can also help you decide between sizes, or ask if an item qualifies for Autoship. Ask first, then buy.
Three Habits That Save More Than Coupons

- Check price per unit. The site shows per pound or per treat figures. Use them.
- Read the sale tag with care. A price marked down from a list price is not always lower than another site.
- Keep Autoship honest. Skip a delivery when the food bag is still half full.
Price Check Table
| Category | Chewy | Petco | PetSmart | Amazon |

Questions People Ask
Can I stack all of these?
Chewy’s terms decide. Read the exclusions on each offer before you assume they combine.
Does the 35% apply to everything?
The Autoship page says it applies to Autoship eligible items, with some exclusions.
Do I need a code?
The offers on the homepage did not list one. If a code is asked for at checkout, use the one shown on Chewy’s own offer page.
Can I return what I buy?
Several product pages mention free 365 day returns. Read the full policy before you rely on it.
Can I cancel the Autoship?
Yes. The page says you can change, cancel or reschedule at any time.
Final Verdict
Plan the first cart, turn on Autoship, use the pharmacy offer once, and decide on Chewy Plus with your own numbers. That order gets the most from the offers listed today.
Confirm each term at checkout, since offers change. If you only have time for one step, make it the first cart. A well planned first order is where Chewy offers the most, and it sets up every Autoship delivery that follows.
